Janaka Ruwanpura is the Vice-Provost International (VPI) at the University of Calgary (UofC), Canada. He has been a Professor and Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Project Management (2007-13) in the Schulich School of Engineering, the Founding Director of the Centre for Project Management (PM) Excellence and the Director of PM since 2005 at the University of Calgary.
He earned a B.Sc. (Hons) in QS (U of Moratuwa, 1992), a M.Sc. in Construction Management (CM) (Arizona State University,1997) and Ph.D. in Construction Engineering and Management (U of Alberta, 2001).
Janaka, a former US Fulbright scholar, has developed many best practices/tools successfully implemented in the construction industry for productivity improvement, PM, project planning, CM, risk management, decision analysis and sustainability.
He has published over 170 technical papers and has been recognized with many national and international awards for teaching, research, service, graduate education and internationalization. Few to mention: the “Industry Partnership Award” for his contribution to the Canadian Construction Industry for collaboration, innovation and transformation (2012), the Walter Shanly career award for construction engineering (Canadian Society for Civil Engineering) and the Brian D. Dunfield Education Service award (Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering, 2012).
Janaka's passion for international activities grew-up over the years and he agreed to give up his second term of the CRC appointment to lead the Internationalization efforts of UofC.
He also serves as the convener and co-leader for the International Institute for Infrastructure Renewal & Reconstruction, an international, multi-university consortium with collaborative research in disaster planning and management. He is a licensed professional engineer in Alberta, a professional quantity surveyor in Canada and a Chartered Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, UK.

The role of the VPI is to oversee and lead the implementation of the university’s new International Strategic Plan launched in March 2013. By aligning the university’s international activities with the Academic and Strategic Research Plans the vice-provost advances the institution’s efforts in international research, academic programming, staff and student mobility, programmatic partnerships, service and development.
